Swensational Sweets

A gallery of my cake and cupcake creations over the last 20 years
How this all got started...

I am a self taught baker and decorator. I have always wanted to take classes but so far I have not. 21 years ago I decided that I wanted to make my daughter's birthday cakes, rather than buy them at the store. For her second birthday I did my best to replicate a doggie in a basket cake that I found in Parent's magazine. Although far from perfect, it set in motion the desire to get better and try new ideas. Eventually I bought a pastry bag and two tips, a number 3 round and a 16 star. I didn't make my frosting at first, but used the canned, already made. I had to learn to compensate for my warm hands, because the heat would make the frosting too soft and my stars wouldn't hold their shape. I realized I would need to make my own frosting if I wanted to get better and I am so glad I did. As the years went by, friends would ask me to do cakes for their children and then people who attended their parties would contact me. It has never become a business, but rather just a hobby that I occassionally get compensated for, and that is how I want it to stay.

Theme Parties and Tablescapes

A gallery of Themed Parties...Baby Showers, Retirement, Christmas...Dessert Tables

I love to throw parties, especially ones that have a theme. This gallery has pictures of those parties and expecially the dessert tables, which are my favorite part to put together.

Baby showers can be really fun. My favorite is the BABY-Q. It was a backyard barbeque theme. The cupcakes were decorated with gummy hamburgers and hotdogs. Guests received small tins with a bbq rub and the tables were decorated with checkered table cloths.

I also do an annual ornament exchange party at Christmas. Colors tend to be traditonal reds and greens and I always like to have some type of craft for my guests. We also play some funny games.

Dessert tables are something that I love to create. Sometimes they are just displays of cupcakes and other times they are more elaborate to include apthocary jars filled with candy.
